How to Install Kali Linux in VMware Workstation Pro (Step-by-Step Guide)
Kali Linux is the industry standard for penetration testing, ethical hacking, and security auditing. Running it inside a virtual machine using VMware Workstation Pro is the safest and most flexible way to test its capabilities without disrupting your main operating system.
Follow this comprehensive guide to get Kali Linux up and running smoothly in VMware.
Prerequisites
Before diving into the installation, make sure you have the following ready:
-
VMware Workstation Pro installed on your host machine (Windows or Linux). (Note: VMware Workstation Pro is now free for personal use!)
-
Kali Linux 64-bit ISO Image downloaded from the official Kali Linux Downloads page.
-
Sufficient Hardware Resources: At least 4GB of RAM (8GB recommended), 20GB+ of free disk space, and CPU virtualization (Intel VT-x or AMD-V) enabled in your BIOS/UEFI.
Step 1: Download the Kali Linux ISO
-
Go to the official Kali Linux download page.
-
Choose the Installer Image (the standard recommended ISO installer, not the live image, for a permanent virtual machine install).
-
Download the 64-bit version.
Step 2: Create a New Virtual Machine in VMware
-
Open VMware Workstation Pro.
-
Click on Create a New Virtual Machine (or press
Ctrl + N). -
Select Typical (recommended) and click Next.
-
Choose Installer disc image file (iso), browse, and select the Kali Linux ISO file you downloaded. Click Next.
-
Select the Guest Operating System:
-
Operating System: Linux
-
Version: Other Linux 5.x or later kernel 64-bit (or Debian 12 64-bit depending on your VMware version). Click Next.
-
-
Name your virtual machine (e.g., Kali Linux 2026) and choose a storage location on your hard drive. Click Next.
-
Specify Disk Capacity: Set the maximum disk size to at least 25GB (or more if you plan to install many tools/wordlists). Choose Store virtual disk as a single file. Click Next.
-
Review your settings and click Customize Hardware before finishing:
-
Memory (RAM): Allocate at least
4096 MB(4 GB) or more. -
Processors: Allocate at least
2CPU cores. -
Network Adapter: Set to NAT or Bridged (NAT is recommended for easy out-of-the-box internet access).
-
-
Click Close, then click Finish.
Step 3: Install Kali Linux
-
Power on your newly created virtual machine by clicking Power on this virtual machine.
-
From the Kali boot menu, use your arrow keys to select Graphical Install and press
Enter. -
Language & Location: Select your preferred language, location, and keyboard layout, then click Continue.
-
Network Configuration: Enter a hostname for your system (e.g.,
kali) and leave the domain name blank unless you are on a corporate network. -
User Accounts:
-
Enter your Full Name for the new user account.
-
Choose a username (e.g.,
kaliuser). -
Create and confirm a strong password.
-
-
Partition Disks:
-
Select Guided – use entire disk and click Continue.
-
Select the virtual disk and choose All files in one partition (recommended for beginners).
-
Select Finish partitioning and write changes to disk, choose Yes to write changes to disk, and click Continue.
-
-
Software Selection:
-
Leave the default desktop environment (XFCE) and the default collection of security tools checked. Click Continue. (Note: This installation can take 10ā20 minutes depending on your hardware).
-
-
GRUB Bootloader:
-
When asked to install the GRUB boot loader, select Yes to install it on your primary drive.
-
Select
/dev/sdamanually as the bootloader device. Click Continue.
-
Step 4: First Boot and Post-Install Setup
-
Once the installation completes, click Continue to reboot the virtual machine.
-
Log in using the username and password you created during setup.
-
Install VMware Tools (open-vm-tools): For the best experience (resizing windows smoothly, copy-pasting between host and guest), open a terminal inside Kali and run the following commands to install open-vm-tools:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y open-vm-tools-desktop fuse
sudo reboot
After rebooting, your Kali Linux virtual machine will be fully optimized, secure, and ready for your penetration testing tasks!
